What is this? A new episode of the Bastcast?!

Kind of.

With everyone being busy, the Bastcast has been put on a mild Hiatus. But rest assured, we’re still dedicated to the podcast! Which is why Mark and Thomas have posted a recording of their D&D Session this summer. We apologize for the abruptness of the recording, Mark didn’t even inform the other players he was going to record them (a side-effect of his training as a Russian Spy), and just gave Thomas a USB stick while whispering “Here’s the package, bub” (a core part of his work as a UPS package deliverer). As a result, the first ~20 minutes are missing, but we’ve filled you in on the details with an introduction.

We had a ton of fun playing, and hope you enjoy the recording. We plan on having more sessions over the summer, and will be posting them as well.

And as always, Semi-NSFW

The Players

  • Thomas (@LockeCole117) – “Glorn Hammerfast” & GM
  • Mark (@aDevilishTurtle) – “Terrance ‘Medic’ Cidem”
  • @galahir950 – “Galahir”
  • Thomas’s Girlfriend – “Pelenor?” (See the Audience Challenge Below)

Audience Challange!

It’s mentioned in the audio introduction, but one of our players cannot come up with a name that they like for their character. So we decided to ask the audience to come up with a name! If you have any names for a Male Elf Rogue, please comment on the episode, email postcast (at) bastcast.com, or @reply them to @thebastcast. Thanks!

@Galahir950 sent us in his favorite Mystery Science Theatre 3000 episodes and shorts. Feel free to discuss the validity of his claims in the comments!

Just as we mentioned in Episode 6, Thomas has decided to don his hat specifically used to make conceited suggestions and present his Top 7 Cowboy Bebop Episodes. Why 7? Because choosing 10 would be cheating, since there are only 26 episodes, and it helps create a “distilled” version of the show. Luckily, each episode can more or less be taken independently of each other, so you can pick and choose from this list based with little ramifications!

Cowboy Bebop on: Amazon and Netflix

  1. Ganymede Elegy: Oh man, this has to be my all-time favorite episode of the series. It’s got some fantastic writing, great music, and encompasses a lot of the noir aspects that are crucial to the show.
  2. Black Dog Serenade: A close second to “Ganymede Elegy”, which wins out because I feel the writing is stronger. Personally, I consider these two episodes part of the “Jet Session”, because they work so well together and both focus on his past.
  3. Stray Dog Strut: A fun little romp, which introduces Ein into the show, and highlights the series’ quirky moments.
  4. Mushroom Samba: A peculiar episode with a lot of references to Blaxploitation, soul, and funk. Oh, and hallucinogenic drugs.
  5. Asteroid Blues: The pilot is a great primer for newcomers, but unfortunately falls slightly flat at the end. Focusing on a distinctly Western theme, spending enough time on the action sequences to help ease in the audience, and highlighting Spike and Jet’s method; while skimping on the plot, do a lot to make sure the audience understands what the show is trying to do?
  6. Heavy Metal Queen: Despite how clichéd it might be at times, it’s a very solid episode with a heavy metal soundtrack. How could I resist?
  7. Ballad of the Fallen Angels: Despite how much I dislike the “main plotline” episodes of the series, I love the fatalistic tone of the episode and the homages to John Woo.

Feel free to comment on this post! I’d love to hear your thoughts on this list (or how wrong I am, which is usually the case).

…watch THESE episodes of The X-Files!

As part of Daniel’s “Geek 101″ homework (listen to Episode 4 to hear about this), and also just because I can, I’ve compiled a list of my personal favorite episodes of The X-Files (from seasons 1-7 only, as I have yet to watch 8 or 9).

The majority of these episodes have nothing to do with the ongoing mythology story arc (mytharc) of the series, which makes them much easier to watch without having watched the rest of the series.

Presented in chronological order, the episodes of The X-Files (Seasons 1-7) that I recommend watching:

Sidenote: After re-watching all of the old trailers I could find, it’s amazing how different they make some of these episodes out to be!

The BastCast Episode 4: Cowboy Bleepbloops
I think is time to blow these bleeps, get everybody the bloops together.
